Aux Experience
As a first-time aux, I was a bit nervous about joining a school in a new country without much experience in teaching. However, after being a part of the IES Profesor Tierno Galván team for the past few months, I am very grateful for the staff and students who have been nothing but kind and welcoming to me as a language assistant.
It can be somewhat jarring stepping into an already-established community, especially if you are unfamiliar with the cultural dynamic of Spanish workplaces like I was. Luckily, the staff is friendly and happy to help you with any questions or problems you may have. The bilingual coordinator was especially supportive, both at the school and around Córdoba. I cannot stress enough how amazing the bilingual education department is; you will have a great support system around you!
My classes consisted of students from all ESO grades (first-fourth) in Math, Biology, Music, Geography/History, and Physical Education. Each of these subjects has unique expectations and guidelines, so it’s best to speak with the teachers early on to establish how you can be an asset in the classroom. Having a way to communicate outside of school hours (through WhatsApp for example), is important to make sure that you and the teacher are prepared for each week. Don’t be afraid to suggest ideas for classroom activities– the teachers are very eager to work with you!
Getting to interact with the students at IES Profesor Tierno Galván has honestly been the most rewarding part of this experience. They are passionate and outgoing, even with the language barrier. At first, I thought that strictly speaking English and responding only to English would be the best way to encourage them to learn the language. The reality, however, is that their language skills vary greatly, with most students not yet ready to hold conversations in English. I have learned that the best way I can benefit their bilingual education is to value understanding over accuracy. For me, this meant responding to students even if they spoke to me in Spanish and translating some words that proved to be difficult. I believe that being an approachable and trustworthy figure in the classroom makes language learning less intimidating and more enjoyable for everyone.
Overall, IES Profesor Tierno Galván is a great school! The people are warm, the town is beautiful, and the work you do with the students is gratifying. I highly recommend choosing this school for any language assistant excited to experience life in a charming Spanish pueblo.
